A man has been arrested after driving his car through the front gate of the Russian consulate in Sydney.

Police were called at about 8 a.m. on Sept. 1 after receiving reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of the consulate, which is located at Fullerton Street, Woollahra, a suburb in the affluent eastern suburbs of Sydney.

On arrival, officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command attempted to speak to the driver. However, he allegedly drove his vehicle into the gates of the property, according to a New South Wales (NSW) Police statement obtained by The Epoch Times.

“A 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries,” reads the statement.

A 24-year-old constable injured his hand and received treatment from NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Two other constables, aged 22 and 25 respectively, sustained minor injuries and were also treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene.

Images by Sky News Australia, show the vehicle had crashed through the gate and onto the grass outside the consulate building, coming to a stop at the base of a flagpole. The front passenger window of the white Toyota Kluger is completely shattered, while the driver’s window severely damaged.
Witnesses reported seeing a NSW Police dog unit search the vehicle and an officer draw his gun during the incident.

He was roused by the sound of police sirens around 8:30 a.m. Initially mistaking the noise for a nearby fire, he stepped outside to discover the Toyota parked on the consulate’s lawn.

Boikov stated that the driver was already being chased by police when he drove through the compound’s gates.

“From my side, it looks like a diplomatic asylum attempt,” he said.

No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

The Epoch Times has contacted the Russian consulate for comment.
