A man has been charged with murder after being accused of a fatal stabbing in a Gold Coast shopping centre car park.

Police were called to the Hope Island car park on Monday afternoon, March 11, following reports a man had been seriously assaulted.

Detective Inspector Mark Mooney on March 12 said they believe the 21-year-old victim was stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Paramedics arrived and treated the man who had a chest wound but he died at the scene.

A 23-year-old Redbank Plains man was arrested about 5.30pm on March 11 and later charged with murder.

Mr. Mooney said it was a “devastating” situation for the families of everyone involved.

“We’ve got two families of young men, both of them whose lives are ruined - one no longer with us and one who possibly will spend a long period of time in prison,” he said.

The 23-year-old Redbank Plains man was set to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on March 12.

A 23-year-old Surfers Paradise man was also arrested on March 11 but has since been released without charge.

Police said both men were known to the victim.

Anyone with information or footage of the incident has been urged to contact police.
