EU Plans to Double Steel Tariffs, Cut Import Quotas in Bid to Protect Industry

The EU steelmaking industry is the world’s third largest steel producer, with production sites across more than 20 member states.

The European Union announced on Oct. 7 plans to double tariffs on foreign steel and cut by half the amount allowed into the bloc before duties apply, in a push to shield struggling producers from global overcapacity.

Industry Commissioner Stephane Sejourne said the new rules were meant to defend Europe’s steel plants and workers.
