An early morning drive-by shooting in Ajax, Ont., has sent six people to hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area, one with life-threatening injuries.

Durham Regional Police say the shooting took place at the back of a restaurant at 154 Harwood Ave. at 1:30 a.m. today, where a barbecue function that had been advertised online was taking place.

The victims are three adult males and three adult females—one is in critical condition and undergoing surgery and the other five sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not provide a description of the suspect, who is being sought after fleeing in a dark-coloured, four-door vehicle.

Officers on scene were not able to provide information about whether the suspect and victims knew each other as the investigation is in its early stages.

The force’s forensics identification unit is currently processing the scene.

Officers say “a lot of people” were at the barbecue, and they are urging those who attended to come forward with information to help their investigation.
