More than 20 years ago when Edmonton-based criminal defence lawyer Daniel Mol began practising law, he says the legal system did reasonably well at balancing the rights of the public and complainants with the accused.
But the situation has changed markedly in the past decade, Mol says, particularly in sexual assault cases, where a push for more convictions has led to several key legislative changes that he believes have tilted the legal system too far against the accused.
