An inter-provincial organization is launching a campaign to promote Christian candidates in the upcoming Alberta municipal elections, saying it wants to engage and bring together voters and candidates with similar values.

The event, put on by the Christian Impact Network (CIN), will start in Westlock on July 5, as a way for voters to get to know Christian candidates for the October municipal elections. CIN is made up of Christian professionals, including elected officials from the federal, provincial, and municipal levels.

Guest speakers at the event stops include former Conservative cabinet minister and Canadian Alliance Party Leader Stockwell Day and a number of MLAs, mayors, city councillors, and school board trustees, according to a CIN news release.

The rally was designed to inspire candidates, event organizer Michael Clark said in an emailed statement. He noted the rallies have been held in other parts of the country, including in Ontario in 2022.

“We successfully piloted this concept during the 2022 municipal election in Ontario, mobilizing 110 Christian candidates (mayors, city councillors, and school board trustees),“ he said. ”We are now expanding to Alberta since local candidates were registering with us a year before we even announced our involvement.”

Clark said the goal was to engage culture and “shape” it.

Stops for the Alberta event include Westlock on July 5, Red Deer on July 8, Lethbridge on July 10, Medicine Hat on July 11, Calgary on July 12, Edmonton on July 14 and 20, Alder Flats on July 15, Drayton Valley on July 16, Lloydminster on July 17, and Ponoka on July 21. Event dates for Sherwood Park and Grande Prairie will be announced in the coming days.

Candidates that participate in the event are offered ongoing training, mentorship, and strategic support for the campaign.

Similar events are being planned for Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick to promote Christian candidates in municipal elections being held in those provinces later this year, the organization says. CIN is also looking at holding rally in Ontario and British Columbia in 2026.

Alberta’s municipal elections are scheduled for Oct. 20.
