A cardiology clinic in Saskatchewan, the birthplace of medicare, has opted out of the publicly funded heath-care system after it struggled to meet its costs under the province’s fee structure.

Dr. Jeffrey Wilkinson, who runs the South Saskatchewan Heart Clinic in Moose Jaw, said in an Oct. 20 statement that he believes it is the first clinic in the province to go private since universal health care was introduced in 1962.
