B.C. Conservative MLA Brent Chapman says he has recently been diagnosed with cancer but will continue serving his riding, while the party says another MLA will step in for some of Chapman’s responsibilities as he undergoes treatment.
Chapman, who has a background in acting, producing, and broadcasting, was first elected to the Surrey South riding after the 2024 provincial election.
Chapman said he remains “fully committed” and “focused” on recovery to do the work he was elected to do.
“I have been deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my colleagues, friends, and community,” he said.
Chapman said the entire caucus has rallied behind him, adding that “their support has been immediate, sincere, and deeply affirming.” He said that B.C. Conservative LeaderRustad has also given him “encouragement and strength.”
The party said that Richmond Centre MLA Hon Chan would temporarily take over Chapman’s transit and ICBC critic responsibilities while he is undergoing cancer treatments.
“Brent will continue to serve and support the people of Surrey South throughout his treatment,” a party spokesperson said in a statement to The Epoch Times. “We stand with Brent and his family during this time. Our entire caucus wishes him strength and a full recovery.”
Chapman said his wife, former federal cabinet minister and Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, has been his “rock” throughout his ordeal, and added that his children and grandchildren have been a source of inspiration for him.
