A New South Wales (NSW) offer to heavily subsidise batteries for homes with rooftop solar systems has been pitched as a key plank in the shift to renewables as the state defends its lifeline for Australia’s biggest coal-fired power plant.

The plan, announced on May 24, means more than one million households with solar panels could save as much as $2400 (US$1590) in the up-front costs of installing a battery.
