Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is calling for de-escalation and clearer objectives on the Iran War from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Albanese backed the initial goals of the operation, which include stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and degrading its ability to attack its Middle Eastern neighbours.
“Certainly agree with that, a worthy objective given the nature of the Iranian regime. Secondly, we wanted to damage Iran’s capabilities to attack its neighbours or to assist its proxies in Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis and others as well.
“But the third was regime change. And I note the president today has said that there has been regime change,” Albanese added.
ASIO had gathered “credible intelligence” to prove Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed the two attacks: the Oct. 20, 2024 arson incident at Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney, and the Dec. 6, 2024 firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne.
As the current conflict continues, global oil prices have spiked resulting in high petrol prices at the bowser and shortages.
“I want to see a recognition of the economic damage that this conflict is continuing to result in. And I want to see any objective of what is to be achieved by further conflict rather than negotiation, and I want to see an end or a de-escalation to the conflict there,” Albanese said.
He added that the Trump administration had largely achieved its current objectives.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Trump says talks with the Iran regime are going well but threatened further attacks on its energy and water resources if a deal is not reached.
