Australian Aboriginal Flag to Fly on Sydney Harbour
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JULY 05: The Indigenous Flag is seen flying during the NAIDOC March. Debate has begun around who owns the Indigenous Flag and who can use it under copyright law. The march marks the start of NAIDOC Week, which runs in the first full week of July each year. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Aboriginal flag will have a permanent spot on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the NSW state government committing $25 million (US$17.3 million) to install a third flagpole by the end of the year.
Flying the Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian and NSW state flags was an important gesture towards “Closing the Gap,” NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said about the 2022/23 budget announcement.
