On April 4, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a bill laying the legal groundwork for a potential EU membership bid by the South Caucasus country.

The move, which received relatively scant media coverage, came amid ongoing tensions with neighboring Azerbaijan, Armenia’s longstanding foe in the region.
