A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea at a depth of 129.6 kilometers (80.5 miles) at 7:19 a.m. local time on May 7, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The powerful quake was so strong it was felt in parts of Australia’s far north about 600 kilometers (373 miles) away.
