Venezuela was rocked by two powerful earthquakes on June 24—a 7.2-magnitude quake followed just 39 seconds later by a larger 7.5-magnitude main shock—the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Approximately 235 people have died, and at least 4,300 are injured, Health Minister Carlos Alvarado told state media on Thursday. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
