A toddler has died and several others were injured after a vehicle crashed into a daycare centre in Richmond Hill, according to York Regional Police (YRP).

YRP said seven children and three adults were injured after a vehicle hit a building around 3 p.m. local time in the area of Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive.

Police said that a one-and-a-half-year-old boy died and another child was taken to hospital with “serious injuries.”

The children were between the ages of one-and-a-half years and 3 years old.

Police said the incident did not appear to be a deliberate act, saying the driver was a man in his 70s.

Const. Kevin Nebrija told reporters at a news conference that the driver had been arrested.

Nebrija said initial information indicated that the vehicle was in the parking lot before it went through the window of the daycare.

There were 96 children at the daycare in multiple rooms in the building at the time of the incident, police said. All children have been accounted for and their parents notified.

Police have closed Yonge Street from Gamble Road to Brookside Road. YRP have asked drivers to avoid the area, and told drivers they can expect significant delays.
