Woman wins $40M, not $40K: A Toronto woman thought she won only $40,000 in the lottery but it turned out she won $40 million.
“I went home and I told my daughter, ‘Oh, I won $40,000! I won $40,000!’” Maria Carreiro told reporters earlier this week, according to CBC News.
However, she later learned that it was $40 million.
“It said $40 million and then I go: ‘Oh my God,’” she recalled. “And I ran back up the street, home and then I go: ‘I need a glass of water.’ So I drank a glass of water and said: ‘Let me go sit down and relax.’ And that was it.”
Her husband, when he heard the news, quickly made plans to quit his job.
Carreiro, an immigrant from Portugal, bought the ticket last Friday at the Variety and Video store in Toronto, according to CNN.
“It still hasn’t sunk in,” said Carreiro’s daughter Manuela, according to the network. “My dad works so hard, and we’ve been struggling so much ... $40 million is so much money.”
First, Carreiro said she plans on buying houses for “my daughters and me.”
