Woman smuggle 30 pounds: Investigators are looking to an incident where a Mexican woman unknowingly smuggled around 30 pounds of marijuana across the U.S.-Mexico border.
The woman was going to work in San Diego, leaving at around 3 a.m. When she arrived at work, she noticed two men removing items from her car’s underbelly, reported NBC San Diego.
The men then noticed the woman and hastily ran off with the packages before taking off in a black sedan.
When she called the police, they found several packages with marijuana inside them.
“It appears the woman unknowingly transported the marijuana across the border,” San Diego Police Department spokesman, Lt. Kevin Mayer, told Patch.com.
He said there were no arrests as of Monday.
Police are still investigating the matter.
There have been reports of “blind mule” cases where smugglers place drugs underneath or inside the vehicles of people traveling across the border under the SENTRI system.
The SENTRI system requires a person to have passed an extensive background check and many use the system’s reserved lanes.
But some drug smugglers have used these cars as drug mules, according to CNN and The New York Times.
“It was a nightmare, like suddenly being in a nightmare,” Juan Andres, who was targeted in the scam, told CNN. “I [asked] God, ‘Why did you allow something like this to happen?’ ”
Andres was found guilty after police found drugs in his vehicle, spending six months in prison.
