A Texas woman hit a carjacker with her car after fighting him off after he threatened her and the woman’s two children with a knife.
Dorothy Baker-Flugence was leaving a local CVS in Baytown when the suspect, Ismael Martinez, emerged from her backseat with a knife.
“The guy pulled a knife on her,” husband Charles Flugence told ABC-13. “He had a knife on my son.”
Martinez wanted Baker-Flugence to give him $200, reported the Houston Chronicle.
Flugence said that she struggled with the attacker and eventually wrestled the knife away from him.
“She got the knife,” Flugence said. “She got a cut that goes across her chest. She grabbed the knife and he bit her hand.”
Authorities told the station that she drove her van off the road to try and confuse Martinez.
“I thought, ‘If you swerve and hit the pole, he’s not wearing a seatbelt, he’ll go through the windshield or at least hit his head, and you can stop him. You can do something to make sure that he doesn’t hurt your kids,'” Baker-Flugence told the station. “That’s all I was thinking of really, was just to get him away from my kids.”
She also punched him in the face, causing him to get out of the car before she ran him over. She told police that she was not trying to seriously injure him.
Her two young children, ages 2 and 5, were not injured in the incident, according to the Chronicle. Martinez was flown to the Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
