Will.i.am, the rapper for the Black Eyed Peas, defended himself on Monday after he was criticized for wearing blackface paint costume before MTV Video Music Awards.

He wore the costume during a show with Nicki Minaj before the awards show began Sunday night and said there was nothing “racial” about it, adding that it was just part of his costume.

“Just because I where all black including head mask as expression and emphasize my outfit, it shouldn't be looked at as racial,” the 35-year-old singer and producer said via his Twitter account.

“Let go of the past. there are far more important things 2 bark about. (Jobs, health, education) not a black man wearing all black everything.”

Two hours later, his account experienced a surge in criticism against him.

"Are you guys serious? my outfit set 'black people back 100 yrs' choose your twits wisely. no education sets people back, no jobs, bad health,” he added.
