White House Lockdown: Area Cleared Near Penn Ave., North Lawn; Suspect ‘Threw Object’ Over Fence

Secret Service agents on Wednesday cleared the North Lawn of the White House, which was placed on lockdown, over reports of a suspicious package. Reports say a man was arrested for throwing a package over the fence.

Lafayette Park was also placed on lockdown.

The package was reportedly located near Penn Ave. in Washington, D.C.

Peter Alexander of NBC News broke the story at around 2 p.m. local time.

Pat Pugliese, who apparently works at the White House, wrote on Twitter that the facility on lockdown.

Nedra Pickler, a reporter with The Associated Press, tweeted that a handcuffed man was being loaded into a police cruiser near Penn Ave.

Both CBS and AP reported that a man was arrested for throwing an object over the White House fence.
