Environmentalists around the world will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day Thursday. The White House will give hundreds of millions of dollars to various environmental groups with Vice President Joe Biden leading the way.

The White House organized five days of Earth Day celebrations. They started Wednesday and include efforts to further the Recovery Act. The Recovery Act includes $452 million for green initiatives in 25 states across the U.S.

“For forty years, Earth Day has focused on transforming the way we use energy and reducing our dependence on fossil fuel - but this year, because of the historic clean energy investments in the Recovery Act, we’re poised to make greater strides than ever in building a nationwide clean energy economy,” said Vice President Biden.

The Department of Energy’s Retrofit Ramp-Up initiative is organizing a multitude of non-profit organizations, environmentalist groups, community groups, and charitable foundations to work together to help the environment.

“Block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, we will make our communities more energy efficient and help families save money. At the same time, we’ll create thousands of jobs and strengthen our economy,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu in a White House press release.

New York State Research and Development Authority will take the largest chunk of the funds with an allotment of $40 million. Los Angeles County will receive $30 million for environmental groups and area projects. Boulder County, Colorado, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Phoenix, Arizona will receive $25 million.

Other less populated areas will get funding as well. For a complete list of the distribution of funds visit. www.Whitehouse.gov.
