New Year’s Eve isn’t considered a national holiday but a number of government agencies like the U.S. Post Office (USPS) and businesses close early, aren’t open, or will have limited hours. Chains like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy are open on Jan. 1, 2014, New Year’s Day and on Dec. 31, 2013, New Year’s Eve.
The Post Office, schools, libraries, city halls, federal government buildings and many state government offices like the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be closed on New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve, many will close early and will have limited hours, except for schools, which are closed. Check local listings for hours.
Public transportation in big cities generally run on holiday or weekend schedules on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
There will be no mail delivery on New Year’s Day, the USPS website says. Only Priority Mail Express will be delivered New Year’s Day.
Local U.S. Post Offices will have limited hours on New Year’s Eve and many will close at noon. Check local listings. Mail will be delivered New Year’s Eve.
On Thursday, Jan. 2, most government offices will resume work, including the DMV and Post Office.
Private mail carriers FedEx and UPS also don’t work on New Year’s Day, but they'll be open Jan. 2. Packages will be delivered on New Year’s Eve.
A number of major retailers will be open both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but some smaller businesses might be closed. Check local listings.

Walmart: Many Walmart locations are open until 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. Some are open until 10 p.m., but check local listings for specific hours. Some locations will be open New Year’s Day at 6 a.m.
Target: Stores close early at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve but will be open normal hours on New Year’s Day. Check local listings.
Costco: Stores will be closed New Year’s Day. Most stores close at 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve.
Kmart: Kmart will be open regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. New Year’s Day.
Best Buy: Stores will close on New Year’s Eve at around 7 p.m., but hours vary by location. New Year’s Day will have 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours.
Toys R Us: Stores are closed New Year’s Day and have limited hours New Year’s Eve. Check local listings for hours.
Macy’s: Will close at 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. depending on the location. Some Macy’s locations will be open on New Year’s Day.
Walgreens: Normal business hours. The 24-hour stores will operate normally. Check local listings.
CVS: Normal business hours. The 24-hour stores will operate normally. Check local listings.
Rite Aid: Normal business hours. The 24-hour stores will operate normally. Check local listings.
Since New Year’s Day is a federally observed holiday, banks are closed and may have limited hours on New Year’s Eve.
Wells Fargo: Is closed on New Year’s Day but and banking hours vary on New Year’s Eve, with many closing 5 p.m. Check local listings. Branches will reopen on Jan. 2.
Chase Bank: Normal hours on New Year’s Eve but it’s closed New Year’s Day. It will reopen on Jan. 2.
