LOS ANGELES—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed in front of a full house of more than 3,000 people in Los Angeles’ Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Feb. 14.

President of the Rotary Club of Westchester, Cindy Williams, shared the Saturday evening’s performance with 20 of her fellow Rotarians.

“I liked it! The costumes were beautiful,” she said, mesmerized by the dance Sleeves of Silk. “You know what I loved? The way they used the [flowing] sleeves and everything in the dances, very artistic and pretty.”

The dance portrays heavenly maidens with lengthy rippling silk sleeves, appearing as fluttering wings of an airborne fairy, according to the program book.

Ms. Williams, also of the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce, and owner of CW Business Center, was in awe of the animated digital backdrops, wondrous scenes of celestial beings flying across the projection screen, descending onstage to complete a dance and flying off across the screen again.

“That was really fun and beautiful … really good,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun moves across China’s vast culture bringing to life its ancient traditions, from the resounding beat of heavenly drum beats, to the Qing imperial guards, the beloved Chinese story of the Monkey King, to the mountains of Taiwan and to current day China, according to its program book.

Myra Kriwanek, a member of the Westchester Rotary Club, who was experiencing Shen Yun for the very first time, was impressed. “Artistically…very colorful and beautiful.”

Each year Shen Yun creates an entirely new production with new choreography, original musical scores and new costume designs to enrich the story telling of the planet’s oldest civilization, China, its website says.

“Now that we’ve seen it, we'll spread the word and tell more people … what a great production.”

She said the group would “definitely” be returning next year.

“We were privileged to be here tonight. It’s your last show and I know you’re moving on, so thank you [Shen Yun] for coming to Los Angeles.”

New York-based Shen Yun has three companies touring the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will perform next at the California Center for the Arts, San Diego, California, Jan. 19-22.
