A gunman fired shots at the entrance of West Valley Mall in Tracy, California on Thursday night, prompting a police response.

Police were searching every car in the parking lot and holding people inside the mall while they looked for the shooter, but have since concluded the search.

An employee told KCRA that the shooting took place outside a mall entrance near the jewelry stores.

“A witness said he or she saw the shooter run into the east parking lot, which led to the lot’s shutdown,” after which police searched the parking lot and prevented people from leaving for about an hour.

Darrell Balatayo was at the mall. He said via Instagram: “Just dodged one with my boy ... West Valley Mall shooting about 6 shots popped off right thru the main door as we were walking out Gang Related man it’s a war zone out here and ppl don’t even know it, don’t underestimate your area.”

There are no reports of injuries.

Sources told the Daily Mail that a gunman, a male with a pony tail and a red hat, opened fire at the east entrance just after 5:30 p.m. PDT. A young girl went running inside to warn people. “He’s got a gun!” the girl screamed.

The man jumped into a waiting white Toyota Camry and sped away, said Dave, manager of DeVon Jewelers.

The shooter is described as being about 5 feet 8 inches and in his late teens or early 20s, police said. He had a medium build, long dark hair and wore dark clothing.

He may have left the parking lot on foot.
