West African Food Crisis Looms
International nonprofits, Oxfam and Save the Children, have warning of a severe food crisis in West Africa this year.

“Almost 10 million people across West Africa are facing a food crisis following erratic rains that have caused poor food harvests and water shortages,” according to Oxfam.

Oxfam said that 7 million people will face food shortages in Niger, where some regions had a 30 percent reduced harvest, and other regions had no harvest at all.

In Chad, the harvest yield fell by 34 percent and some 20 million people are endangered.

People in Mali, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso are also endangered according to Oxfam.

Save the Children said that food shortages in previous years have left Niger, one of the world’s five poorest countries, extremely vulnerable and now in need of humanitarian aid.
