Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United and England striker, is once again embroiled in controversy surrounding his decision to leave, then to stay at his Premier League club.

Following talks with club chief executive David Gill and boss Sir Alex Ferguson, remarks were made by Rooney about the motivations of Manchester United, prompting his unpopular decision to leave Old Trafford.

“He [David Gill] did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad.” said Rooney, according to a BBC report.

“It is absolutely true, as he [Sir Alex Ferguson] said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract,” Rooney added. “During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

“For me its all about winning trophies—as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.”

In the end, a phone call from co-owner Joe Glazer on Thursday persuaded Rooney to change his mind, according to the BBC.

Rooney got a new five-year contract with Manchester United as a 25th birthday present while relaxing in Dubai with an ankle injury, even as Manchester United surged to a 2-1 win over Stoke City thanks to Javier Hernandez’s 86th minute goal on Sunday.
