New York City has the longest wait list for charter schools in the nation, according to a new survey. In their annual assessment of wait lists for charter schools in the United States, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS) found that there are far more kids trying to get access to a specialized school in New York City than any other city.

The NAPCS survey found 52,900 kids in New York City are on a waitlist to attend a charter school. The survey took into account kids who might be on more than one list.

“Obviously people are not happy with the quality of education,” said Nina Rees, President and CEO of NAPCS. She added that they run the survey because “it’s always good to know what the demand is.”

The national total of waitlisted students is 500,000. The entire state of California is the only place that comes close to having as many students waiting to attend a charter school as New York City, at about 50,000.
