The federal government has intensified investigations into reports of engine fires in Volkswagen Passats, affecting nearly 500,000 cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation said last week that it had received 14 reports of engine fires in Volkswagen Passats due to a potential faulty ignition coil.

Additionally, the car safety watchdog also had 21 complaints of failures in Passat ignition coils that did not spark a fire.

The investigation involves 490,000 Volkswagen Passats and spans cars from the model years 2001 to 2007, according to The New York Times.

Cars that were experiencing ignition coil issues would hesitate or lose power, and their “check engine” or other dashboard lights were lit up.

Ignition coils in cars are used to run a high-powered current to fire spark plugs, which start and sustain the engine. When ignition coils fail, the engine will cease to run.

According to the Times, Volkswagen has been haunted by ignition coils in the past: in 2003, the German carmaker also had problems with ignition coils in some of its 2001-2002 cars.
