November 5, 2013 Updated: November 5, 2013

Virginia election results for the 2013 race show that Terry McAuliffe was elected governor.

The extremely close race between Democrat McAuliffe, a businessman, and Republican Ken Cuccinelli, the current attorney general for Virginia, continued until almost the final vote was counted before it was called.

With 98.50 percent of precincts (2503 of 2541) reporting, the vote count was:

McAuliffe: 47.20 percent (1,000,322 votes)

Cuccinelli: 45.75 percent (969,618 votes)

Sarvis: 6.61 percent (140,164 votes)

We’ll keep the post updated as the results are tallied.

McAuliffe turned back the challenge from Cuccinelli, a tea party favorite.

“Thank you, Virginia” McAuliffe said via Twitter, tweeting a picture of him and his family.
