A group of more than a thousand Central Americans in Guatemala are headed toward the Mexican border on Oct. 23, as the first caravan paused in southern Mexico on its planned journey toward the U.S. border.
President Donald Trump has vowed to begin cutting millions of dollars in aid to Central America and called the caravan in Mexico a national emergency as he seeks to boost his Republican Party’s chances in the Nov. 6 congressional elections.
The caravan, which has been estimated at 7,000 to 10,000 mostly Honduran migrants fleeing violence and poverty in their homelands, is currently in the town of Huixtla in Chiapas state around 31 miles (50 km) north of the Guatemalan border.
Trump Signs $6 Billion Package of Bipartisan Opioid Bills
President Donald Trump on Oct. 24 signed a bipartisan package of bills on opioid addiction that he called “the single largest bill to combat the drug crisis in the history of our country.”It also seeks to prevent doctor shopping by requiring that prescriptions for certain controlled substances to go through electronic programs.
In trying to prevent Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids from entering the country, the act creates and expands programs aimed at detecting them, including a pilot program for point-of-use drug testing.
“Together we are going to end the scourge of drug addiction in America. We are going to end it, or we are ... at least going to make an extremely big dent in this terrible, terrible problem,” Trump said before signing the bill.
Good Samaritans Stop ATM Robbery
A terrifying attempted robbery at a Florida ATM was broken up by a pair of good samaritans.
The suspect reached into a car window to try and steal a purse while the 55-year-old female driver was doing her banking. He was armed with a box cutter.
Her horn-honking during the struggle caught the attention of some passersby, who engaged the suspect in a fight.
Three White Bengal Tiger Cubs Born in Crimea
The public got a chance to see three rare white Bengal tiger cubs born in a Crimean safari park. The cubs were born in early October. They were still not able to open their eyes, and squeaked as they tried to crawl on the park grass.
The chief zookeeper said the birth of the blue-eyed Bengal tiger triplets was an important contribution saving the animals from extinction.
White tigers are a genetic variation of the better-known orange Bengal tigers.
Between 5,000-7,000 tigers live in the wild, down from 100,000 at the start of the 20th-century. Poaching, deforestation, and over-hunting of their natural prey have affected their numbers.
