As rescue efforts turn to recovery in the wake of the tsunami that killed at least 222 and injured over 800 in Indonesia, questions mount as to the efficacy of the early warning system.

An underwater landslide caused by volcanic activity triggered the deadly tsunami, which slammed into the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra on Dec. 22, leaving havoc and devastation in its path.

The wall of water crashed into hotels, houses, and a group of people attending a beach concert.

Anak Krakatau Volcano Believed to be the cause of Indonesia tsunami

The underwater landslide, which triggered the tsunami, was thought to be related to the eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. The waves of the tsunami were exacerbated by an abnormally high tide because of the full moon, officials said on Dec. 23.

Trump Scraps Christmas Vacation as Partial Government Shutdown Continues

President Donald Trump will not be attending a scheduled Christmas vacation in Florida due to the partial government shutdown.

The Senate adjourned after lawmakers failed to break an impasse on budget legislation and Trump’s request for $5.7 billion in funding for building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sent senators home until Dec. 27 as there appeared to be no hope of a new deal on the bill.

The partial government shutdown will now extend through the Christmas holiday.
