Videos of the Day: Mexicans Gather in Mass Protest in Border Town Overrun by Caravan Migrants

Hundreds of residents of the Mexican border city of Tijuana took to the streets on Nov. 18 to protest the mass arrival of Central American migrants waiting to seek asylum in the United States.

With flags and banners, and shouting slogans they demanded the departure of caravan members from the country, accusing them of generating insecurity and violating Mexican laws.

“They are invaders! They are armed! Get out of the country,” they shouted. The protest also involved some residents from the nearby U.S. city of San Diego, California.

The thousands of migrants who have arrived in Tijuana have saturated the shelters, and many more sleep on the streets. Local authorities have asked for federal support to give the migrants the humanitarian aid and services they need as they attempt to got through the asylum process to enter the United States, which could take months.

The mayor of Tijuana, Juan Manuel Gastelum, said on Friday that he expected the arrival of about 10,000 migrants to the city.

New Caravan Departs From El Salvador

A group of about 200 migrants departed from El Salvador on Nov. 18.

They’re headed to the United States to join the other caravans.

The Salvadoran government said it continues to call on people not to make these kinds of journeys or put minors at risk.

These caravans have been largely organized on social media sites.

More new groups are expected to leave Central America on Nov. 23 and Jan. 2.

Nelson Concedes as Rick Scott Wins Florida Senate Race

Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s victory in the race for a U.S. Senate seat is nearing official acknowledgment. The results have already been through machine and hand recounts. A slew of lawsuits filed by Scott’s opponents is running out of arguments that would affect the result.

After the hand recount concluded on Nov. 18, Scott still led by about 10,000 votes against the incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who conceded the race after learning the results.

President Donald Trump congratulated Scott via Twitter.

“From day one Rick Scott never wavered. He was a great Governor and will be even a greater Senator in representing the People of Florida,” he said. “Congratulations to Rick on having waged such a courageous and successful campaign!”

The Florida election results are to be certified as official on Nov. 20.

Pence and Second Lady Have Thanksgiving Dinner With Troops

Vice President Mike Pence broke bread with troops on Andersen Air Force Base’s dining hall on the night of Nov. 18, during his nearly three-hour stopover in Guam.

Pence and his wife Karen were greeted by a small group of well-wishers including Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo and Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, commander of the joint military forces on Guam.

Pence visited Guam on the day he announced the United States would be collaborating with Papua New Guinea and Australia to build a naval base on Manus Island, which was a strategic base during World War ll.

Paradise Teachers Help Students Left Without a School After the Camp Fire

There are 32,000 students in Butte County who are not in class right now.

Many of them don’t have a school and a lot of them lost their homes.

Elementary age children from Paradise are being told the story of Thanksgiving to help them escape their painful reality.

Annie Finney, a second-grade teacher in Paradise said, “It is therapeutic, and it’s good for the kids. It gives them a sense of life again.”
