Nikki Haley, the United States’ ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned and will step down from her role at the end of the year, President Donald Trump said.

Trump, along with Haley, made the announcement at the White House on Oct. 9. The White House will pick a successor in two to three weeks, the president said.

Haley said that the post had been the honor of a lifetime, but felt like she needed to step aside after serving six years as the governor of South Carolina and almost two years as the U.N. ambassador.

“I am such a lucky girl to have been able to lead the state that raised me and to serve a country I love so very much. It has really been a blessing, and I want to thank you for that,” Haley told Trump.

President Donald Trump will meet with rapper Kanye West in the White House on Oct. 11. The two will have lunch and discuss a number of issues pertinent to the black community, especially in Chicago, where West has an opportunity to offer a helping hand.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in an Oct. 9 statement that “topics of discussions will include manufacturing resurgence in America, prison reform, how to prevent gang violence, and what can be done to reduce violence in Chicago.”

Trump has recently announced a move to reduce violent crime in Chicago, where 2,346 have been shot so far this year (through Oct. 8).

West grew up in Chicago and recently announced he will be moving back from Los Angeles.

A successful pop artist, producer, entrepreneur, and supporter of Trump, West is uniquely positioned to connect Trump with the black community, which has nearly uniformly voted left for decades.

US Calls for ‘Thorough’ Probe on Missing Saudi Journalist

The U.S. State Department has called on Saudi Arabia to conduct a “thorough” probe into the mysterious disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, whose case sparked international concern over the kingdom’s apparent crackdown on dissent.
Khashoggi, a regime critic and prominent journalist in Saudi Arabia, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. Officials in Turkey believe he was murdered inside the building, while the Saudis claim he left the building unharmed. Khashoggi also is a Washington Post contributor.

In response, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the Saudi government to be “transparent” about the results of any investigation.

“We have seen conflicting reports on the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi,” Pompeo said in an Oct. 8 statement. “‎As the President has conveyed, the United States is concerned by his disappearance.”

Archaeologists Uncover 2,000-Year-Old Inscription of the Word Jerusalem in Hebrew

Israeli archaeologists unveiled on Tuesday a 2,000-year-old inscription believed to be the first complete Hebrew spelling of the word Jerusalem as known in its current form—Yerushalayim.

The stone was unveiled at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and will go on display to the public on Wednesday.

It was discovered last year on the outskirts of Jerusalem during excavations that uncovered a Roman structure.

Experts say it is the only stone inscription from the Second Temple period that has the entire spelling.

The only other known instance is an inscription on a coin dating back to the end of the Second Temple period.

Whale Calf Rescued From Shark Nets Off the Coast of Australia

A humpback whale calf found tangled in shark nets off the coast of Australia was freed by rescuers.
Experts from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Sea World Gold Coast worked for almost two hours on Oct. 9 untangling the baby whale off Greenmount Beach in Gold Coast, Queensland, ABC reported.

The nets are suspended from buoys about 500 meters (547 yards) away from the beach to protect swimmers from shark attacks.

The marine park said despite its minor injuries, the calf swam away with its mother after it was released.
