The post-Christmas blizzard that left at least two people dead in the U.S. Midwest and stranded thousands of travelers has fizzled to heavy rain storms that will soak swaths of the southeast, Gulf Coast, and New England through the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

After dumping more than 6-to-10 inches of snow on the Midwest, the storm dropped about 5 inches of rain in Biloxi, Mississippi, and 4 inches of rain on Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the Gulf Coast late Thursday and into Friday, forecasters said.

Bright Light in NYC Mystifies New Yorkers After Transformer Fire

A transformer explosion at an electric power substation in the New York City borough of Queens lit up the night sky with a bright blue light on Dec. 27, mystifying some residents, but officials said no one was injured in the incident.

The blue flashes that briefly lit up the night sky in the Astoria area of Queens, New York, shortly after 9 p.m., were caused by a power surge and electrical “arching” that sparked a transformer explosion and a small fire.

Arrest Made in Killing of California Police Officer, Suspect is Illegal Immigrant

A suspected illegal immigrant accused of shooting to death a California police officer was arrested on Friday, December 28, after a two-day manhunt that President Donald Trump cited in his push for building a wall on the border with Mexico.

The officer in Newman, a small Northern California town, was shot and killed after pulling over the suspect on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The suspect was an illegal immigrant from Mexico who has claimed to be involved with a criminal gang called the Surenos.

Trump Threatens to Shut Down Southern Border Over Wall Funding

President Donald Trump said he will close the southern border if Congress doesn’t approve funding for a border wall and deliver immigration reform. He also reiterated that his administration will cut off aid to several Central American countries that, Trump said, have done little to stop their citizens from coming to the U.S. illegally.
