Video: Truck Jumps the Curb, Mows Down Teens on the Sidewalk in Portland

A video shows the moment a truck ran down three people in northeastern Portland, Oregon.

The Jan. 10 chase was captured via home security cameras near Northeast 152nd Avenue and Beech Street, reported KGW-TV.

It shows the driver of a truck hitting at least one of the pedestrians, sending him in the air.

Two other people are seen running away following the incident.

The homeowner, Javier Gonzalez, told KGW that he sent the video to the Portland Police Department.

The footage has since been distributed to Portland officers.

Gonzalez said he checked his surveillance footage after he came home and found his rose bushes and a box outside his home damaged.

He told KGW that he’s happy no one was in the park near his house at the time of the crash.

“Any other day, any other time of the year, that could have been a really horrifying accident,” Gonzalez said.

“I pulled up and I noticed that there were some things around my house that were kind of out of place, you know had a boulder across the street and dirt everywhere, and my rose bushes were all kind of driven over,” he elaborated to KPTV.

Portland police told the outlet that no one involved in the incident reported it to police.

“It looked like, you know, he might’ve had a vendetta or something, and it’s not worth it,” Gonzalez added to KPTV. “Even if someone does something to you, it’s never worth it to go after them. I say you should come forward, even if you did something wrong … hopefully, this can get sorted out.”

Gonzalez, meanwhile, said it’s strange that no one reported the incident to police because it looks like the person who was hit by the car needed medical attention.

“I think that everybody who sees that video was shocked. It’s the last thing you expect,” Gonzalez told KATU.  “It’s a pretty heinous crime and even if those kids don’t want to report it, I think it still needs to be looked into,” he said.

People with information about the incident are being asked to call the Portland Police Department at 503-823-2103.

Officers were told to be on the lookout for the gray pickup with a canopy, Sgt. Brad Yakots, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman, reported OregonLive.

Traffic Stops Dangerous for Police

On Sept. 18, a sheriff’s office in Colorado posted footage of a man rolling out of a stopped vehicle, pointing a gun at officers. “As he continued to advance out of the vehicle deputies shot Askins multiple times, fatally wounding him,” the office said.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund (pdf) said traffic stops are notoriously dangerous for police officers in the United States. The leading causes for officers being shot and killed in 2017 occurred when they were responding to domestic incidents and while conducting traffic stops, the group’s annual report states.

And, according to the most recent figures published by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, “A greater percentage of male drivers (12 percent) than female drivers (8 percent) were stopped by police during 2011.” It adds: “In 2011, about 3 percent of traffic stops led to a search of the driver, the vehicle, or both. Police were more likely to search male drivers (4 percent) than female drivers (2 percent).”
