Sergeant Douglas Hogate Sr. of Salem City Police in New Jersey had a touching moment last week when he reported in on his radio for the last time.

After 28 years of service he’s retiring and it was his son who made it official on the other side of the radio.

“It is with great pleasure to announce that as of 1800 hours on this day, after 28 years of service, my father Salem City Police Sgt. Douglas Hogate Sr., Badge number 612, is retiring and has given his final Code 3,” said the voice on the radio, identifying himself as Salem County PSD Douglas Hogate Jr.

PSD likely stands for Patrol Services Division.

Thousands of people commented the video on Facebook, congratulating the officer and expressing appreciation for his service.

“[I] have yet to watch this video without tears. [I] am so honored to be your niece and to have such a wonderful man in my life! thank you for your service and hard work, and most of all, thank you for your love & compassion! [A]ll of those years of stressful circumstances and tireless work never hardened your heart! you are the most supportive and influential man i have ever known! [I] love you with all of my heart!” commented Facebook user Tiffany Marie.
