Secret camera video footage shows an elderly woman scaring away three intruders who allegedly were trying to rob her home in Tacoma, Washington.
Guelda Messina, 77, was asleep on Monday morning when three burglars entered her home, her daughter, Megan Bostic, told ABC News.
When Messina heard the noise in her living room, she went out to see what it was.
“She came out thinking my dad was still home and hadn’t gone to work yet or maybe it was a cat or something,” Bostic said. “She was instead confronted with these burglars.”
Messina saw the intruders and yelled at them.
“I wasn’t as much scared as ticked off,” Messina told ABC News. “I’m not a morning person.”
Her reaction was to yell, “Get the hell out of here!” Bostic said. “She didn’t have time to be afraid.”
Messina then called her husband, who called the police.
In the footage of the attempted robbery, one of the burglars is seen coming up the stairs in the house and opening the front door for the other two, Bostic said.
“They looked like bumbling idiots,” Bostic said of the robbers in the video. The footage also showed them rummaging through drawers until they were discovered by Messina.
The Tacoma Police Department said the incident was an interrupted burglary. They told ABC they have “not made arrests in this incident at this point in time.”
Messina, after she reviewed the footage, realized that three people were in her home, and it could have turned for the worse very quickly.
“I just can’t… I’ve never lost anybody and I wouldn’t want them to lose me,” she told KOMO News. “I’ve been so happy so fortunate so complacent that this has just dumbfounded me,” she said.
The burglars got away with $20 from her purse and earrings, according to KIRO-TV.
She also offered a little humor. “My mom was joking with the cops, saying how bad her hair looked, when she came out she probably terrified them,” said her daughter.
