A six-alarm fire tore through a parking garage in Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Shopping Center on Sept. 17, according to reports.
A number of vehicles were burned, and more than a dozen people were injured, NBC New York reported. AmNY later reported that 17 people, including 15 firefighters, were injured.
A call about the fire came in from Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue at around 9 a.m., the report said. The report said the fire escalated to a six-alarm fire within an hour.
The Fire Department of New York issued a warning to people with heart or lung conditions to stay away from the area, CBS News reported.
“#FDNY members are operating on scene of a 6-alarm fire at 5100 Kings Plaza in #Brooklyn. There are currently 2 non-life-threatening injuries to civilians, and 15 non-life-threatening injuries to firefighters, reported,” said the FDNY on Twitter.
King’s Plaza mall said it was shut down amid the fire and heavy smoke, adding that people should avoid the area, according to CBS.
“Kings Plaza is currently closed as there is a fire in the parking garage and smoke conditions in and around mall,” mall spokeswoman Dawn Simon told the New York Post.
King’s Plaza has more than 120 stores, including Macy’s, Best Buy, Sears, H&M, Michael Kors, Express, and Foot Locker.
It’s not clear how the fire started. But sources told Pix11 that the fire is “suspicious.”
Other details about the blaze are not clear.
