Video: Hurricane Florence Starts to Hit North Carolina Beach

New video footage shows Hurricane Florence’s storm surge inundating parts of North Carolina’s beach.

NBC Charlotte posted video footage at around 12 p.m. on Sept. 13, of the ocean water moving swiftly over the beach next to a home in Rodanthe, North Carolina. Tim Fitch sent in the footage to the station.

The 11 a.m. update on Hurricane Florence has the storm at a Category 2 just south of Wilmington, North Carolina. The winds are near 105 mph with higher gusts as it moves to the northwest at 12 p.m., according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Heavy rainbands with tropical-storm-force winds spreading across the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and coastal southeastern North Carolina. “Life-threatening storm surge and rainfall expected” soon, the NHC said.

Storm surge warnings and hurricane warnings are in effect for all of North Carolina and most of South Carolina.

North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Georgia declared states of emergency for the storm.

“It truly is really about the whole size of this storm,” National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham told The Associated Press. “The larger and the slower the storm is, the greater the threat and the impact—and we have that.”

Forecasters have said that Florence’s eye could come on shore on Sept. 14, near the North Carolina-South Carolina line. Then it is likely to hover along the coast Sept. 15.
