A New Jersey homeowner was able to scare off two robbers that broke into his home—by utilizing his security camera remotely.
New Jersey State Police released the security camera video on Facebook, asking the public for help in identifying the suspects.
Police said two men broke into the home at 9:30 a.m. on April 12. The robbers kicked the side door open and once inside encountered the homeowner’s dogs. The video shows the dogs barking at the burglars as they make their way through the house looking for valuables to steal.
The homeowner was alerted of the break in while out of the house through the security system. The victim was able to scare off the burglars by speaking through the security camera remotely. What the homeowner said was taken out of the video, but the burglars got the message and immediately left the house.
The incident happened at a residence in Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, N.J.
Police said the robbers were still able to steal a lockbox containing jewelry and personal documents before they were scared away. Police called the incident a “home alone fiasco.”
This isn’t the first time a security camera has helped deal with burglars.
A homeowner in Massachusetts saw two robbers break into his home and watched the robbery unfold on live video while he was at work earlier this month.
When burglars smashed glass as they entered the house, a motion alert notified Damien Girard that his home had been broken into, according to WWLP.
The entire incident was recorded on a Nest Dropcam security camera Girard had installed after a previous robbery.
The video shows two men enter the home. One of them tries to lure Girard’s dog away with a treat.
“We can take this right here ... the computer,” said the burglar as he walked away to go upstairs.
Little did the robbers know that the homeowner had alerted the police and was on his way to the house himself.
The police came while the burglars were upstairs. One of them was arrested, while the other tried to escape through a window, according to the Daily Mail. Girard was at the scene by that time and ran after the robber who tried to escape. Police caught the suspect a few blocks away.
“I had full on adrenaline rage going. I don’t want to be a victim again. I was mad,” said Girard about the incident to WWLP.
Sergeant Kevin Kobza says the security camera helped in catching the burglars. He said many robberies go unsolved.
“After this case I think I may get one myself,” said Kobza.
