Video: Floor Collapses at South Carolina Party, Dropping Dozens to the Basement

A video shows the moment dozens of people were injured during a party in Clemson, South Carolina, after the floor collapsed during the early morning hours of Oct. 21.

Officials told NBC News that 30 people were hospitalized after falling to the basement. Clemson City Police said that nobody was trapped, and the injuries are non-life-threatening.

In the video footage posted on social media, people were shouting and dancing before the floor caved in.

Clemson sophomore Larissa Stone said that the room was “packed” as a popular song played. “So everyone was jumping. The beat was about to drop and literally the whole floor collapsed,” she told the news outlet.

She added: “It happened so quickly. I stood up, and everyone was trying to climb out. People are under other people. People are hurt. People are bleeding. I had blood on my sneakers. It was really bad.”

A witness said that he heard “a boom.”

“All you seen (sic) was falling, everybody’s hands up in the air,” Franzie Pendergrass was quoted by the news outlet as saying.

“By the time I had put one foot out the door, I felt that something was weird and that’s when everyone just collapsed and the guy behind me disappeared,” Raven Guerra, 20, told ABC News. “Everyone was on the floor and people were screaming and there was wood sticking up from the floorboards.”

Guerra added to ABC: “Turning around and seeing a bunch of people who used to be on the second floor now on the basement was really surreal and people were crying. It was a lot to take in.”

Property Manager Speaks Out

Woodlands Property Management President Tal Slann told CNN that people fell through the floor into the basement. The apartment complex is three miles northeast of Clemson University.

“I can tell you there was a party. I can tell you there was a floor collapse. There were injuries. They were not life-threatening. Nobody was trapped,” he told NBC.

Police said they received a 911 call at 12:30 a.m. about the cave-in and ambulances were quickly dispatched to the area.

Slann sent out an email to residents about the collapse.

“The Clubhouse and pool area is OFF LIMITS to all,” the email read, according to The Associated Press. “The clubhouse will be inspected by structural engineers as soon as possible. From there, the homeowner’s association will determine how to rebuild the clubhouse to make it safe for all residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were injured and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Other details about the incident were not clear. Police are investigating the matter.

“We’re continuing to gather information, and are encouraged by the initial reports of no life-threatening injuries,” Clemson University said in a statement to ABC.
