The Victorian government has introduced a new Office of Solar Energy and up to $AU30 million to boost investment in renewable energies, Premier John Brumby said yesterday.

Brumby made the announcement during a visit to inspect a solar receiver and dish at Solar System’s factory in Abbotsford.

The premier explained the grants system will create a partnership with industry to supply green energy to the state’s households.

“Our Government is rising to the challenge of climate change, supporting new initiatives to cut emissions and creating a climate of new economic opportunity,” he said. “The Office is another important step in positioning Victoria as a global player in solar development.”

The new Office of Solar Energy will become the hub for industry, small businesses, community and educational institutes to access information about potential and existing solar projects in the state.

Brumby said the best locations for solar plants are currently being mapped. Solar System’s receiver and dish will be transported to their pilot solar station in Bridgewater.

When asked if the initiative was aimed at attracting Green voters, Brumby replied, “I don’t think you'd expect government to come to a halt three months out from an election.”

Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu doubted whether the promised solar energy projects would eventuate, according to AAP.

“I’m not going to say we oppose them but the detail of them often seems to not materialise,” he told reporters in Melbourne.
