The starting pitchers for Tuesday’s All-Star Game have been announced with Detroit’s Justin Verlander to oppose San Francisco’s Matt Cain, according to a report on Major League Baseball’s website.
“What an honor it is to start my first All-Star Game,” said Verlander, according to the report. “I’m going to relish every moment and hopefully play a part in helping the American league win.”
The five-time All-Star Verlander is well-deserving of the start. Last year’s Cy Young Award winner and American League MVP is at it again this year with a 9–5 record, 2.58 ERA, and a league-leading 128 strikeouts.
Cain, who is 9–3 this season with a 2.62 ERA, was chosen over other equally deserving candidates like R.A. Dickey (12–1, 2.40 ERA) and Stephen Strasburg (9–4, 2.82 ERA).
“I know Dickey’s going to play,” said NL manager Tony LaRussa. “The one edge that I thought made sense, we’ve got Buster [Posey] catching.”
