GOSHEN—Pearl May Herbig, a four-year resident of Valley View Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, turned 105 on Oct. 29, which she said was well-marked by friends and family who came to visit her. She is the oldest resident at Valley View.

Herbig was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1910, grew up in Bergenfield, New Jersey, and moved to Goshen in 1986 with her in-laws. She was a member of the Warwick Valley Quilters Guild and Florida Quilters Club. As a child she began playing the piano,  gave lessons most of her adult life, and played until she was 103.

When asked what her secret to longevity is, Herbig said she didn’t know, but that old age ran in her family.

“They all seem to be like that,” she said.
