The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Super Sixes Saturday at King’s Park on Nov 23 lived up to its billing of a fun afternoon, with U12’s showing their skills as well hosting all three Paul Y Premiership matches.
WhichWay Valley, with their sevens specialist back in the team, sparkled in the first half of their clash against a Leighton Asia HKCC side missing Nick Wheatley and Tom McQueen. The match started at a tremendous pace. Although HKCC scored the first try through Paul Dwyer after nine minutes of play, the conversion was missed. HKCC gave away five kickable penalties in the first half and Khrist Kopetzky obliged taking the score to 15-5 at half time.
HKCC came back strongly in the second half with an under the posts try and conversion by Alex McQueen taking them to 15-12.
But Valley notched up another 5-points with a try by Salom Yiu leaving HKCC needing to score twice to secure a win.
Although HKCC pulled back a penalty to take a bonus point they could not force a win. HKCC’s story of the day was their four missed penalty chances in the first half. Final score 20-15 to Valley.
Scottish vs Kowloon
Hong Kong Scottish put on a masterful display to beat Abacus Kowloon on their home ground 27-12 to rip the Broony Quaich Trophy [only contested at home matches and on Super Saturdays] from Kowloon’s hands.
Converted tries after 7 and 30 minutes into the first half, and a penalty just before the break, gave Scottish a well deserved 17-0 lead before half time.
A further penalty 7-minutes into the second half pushed the score to 20-0, before Kowloon got off the starting blocks to score two tries and a penalty to bring the score back to 20-12.
But Scottish scored a “knock-out” intercept try by Man of the Match Danny Kroll on 37 minutes of the second half, to take the final score to 27-12.
A jubilant HK Scottish team received the Broony Quaich Trophy.
Tigers vs Club
Earlier in the afternoon, Newegde Club again looked well off top form in the first half of this match, with poor handling and too many kickable mistakes giving Borrelli Walsh Tigers plenty of opportunities to add points. Tigers’ Matt Price kicked a drop goal after 12 minutes, and a well converted penalty again by Price after another five minutes, put the Tigers 6-0 up.
Club’s handling and errors in goal kicking was again letting them down, but they did manage to get a try by Adam Raby just before half time to bring the deficit back to 6-5.
Tigers picked up another penalty after seven minutes of the second half, but in a ten minute good spell for Club they scored two tries, one by Sebastien Alfonsi and one by James Hood. A penalty by Raby pushed club out to an 18-9 lead.
The Tigers, after being awarded a penalty in front of the posts at full time, finally decided to kick for goal to take them to 18-12 to give them their first standings point of the 2013 campaign.
Standings
Valley closed the gap to 2-points on leaders HKCC (24), while Club joins Kowloon in equal third (19). HK Scottish progressed to 11 points and Borrelli Walsh Tigers got off the mark with a bonus point.
Next Matches
The new Broony Quaich trophy holders, HK Scottish played so well against Abacus Kowloon in last Saturday’s match that one wonders if they will trouble WhichWay Valley this coming weekend at Shek Kip Mei, when they defend their newly won trophy.
