Uyghur professor Ilham Tohti was arrested in Beijing on July 7 after he posted reports about the protests in Xinjiang on his website.

Tohti, economics professor at China’s Central University of Nationalities, is the founder of the Uyghur Online blog (http://www.uighurbiz.cn). After the July 5 protest started, the Chinese authorities named his website on national television as “inciting riots and spreading rumors.” The website is no longer accessible inside China.

The website’s forum administrator, a journalist for Xinjiang Economy, was also arrested on the same day.

Tohti is known for openly criticizing the violent conflicts between the Uyghur and Han nationalities. He advocates for the cooperation of the two nationalities in seeking democracy and human rights.

Uyghur Online is the most popular Uyghur website in Chinese language.

Since the July 5 protests, Chinese authorities have applied stricter control over the Internet. Following the block of Facebook and Fanfou.com, the Chinese counterpart of Twitter and IP addresses from Xinjiang were blacklisted on China most popular mobile IM tool QQ.
