Utah school evacuated: An elementary school in Utah was evacuated on Monday after a suspicious device was discovered, school officials said.

Mountain View Elementary School in Ogden, located near Salt Lake City, said the students were safely evacuated and would not come back on Monday, reported Reuters.

Parents were asked to take their children home at a Mormon church located close by.

“The employee said it looked like a pipe bomb. He took it off the roof — not too sure why he did that — but police were then notified,” Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams told the Salt Lake Tribune, elaborating on the incident.

Layton Police Department Lt. Shawn Horton told KUTV News that the device contained gunpowder and if it was lit, could have caused an explosion and injury.

The Ogden Standard-Examiner reported that the worker removed the device from the school’s roof.

District officials said that parents were alerted via e-mail and phone to pick up their children.

The paper reported that the Davis County bomb squad detonated a device in the afternoon.

A police investigation is currently underway and authorities are searching the area for any other explosives.
