Utah added another official state symbol to its list, which includes the state fruit, cherry, and the state animal, the Rocky Mountain elk. Last week the Utah State Legislature saw HB 219 signed into law by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert on Friday. The bill designates the Browning M1911 automatic pistol as the official state firearm.

The same bill modified and designated several other state symbols, including the official state flower, fish, and dance.

No funds were appropriated in connection with the bill, as the designation is basically a symbolic one. All U.S. states have a list of state symbols that convey a sense of pride, geography, and history. It is not typical, however, for these lists to include an official state firearm.
