A woman has been charged with attempted kidnapping after allegedly trying to snatch a 4-year-old child as she played in the front yard of her home in Fontana, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
A deputy responding to the attempted kidnapping report arrived at the home to find the child’s mother and father holding down the woman, described as erratic, just after 6 p.m. on Sept. 21.
The mother and father pinned down Lopez, who authorities described as erratic, until deputies arrived.
The mother sustained injuries to her face and upper body, the department said. The father and child were not hurt.
During the arrest, the deputy learned that Lopez is on active parole for assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon.
She has no known connection to the victim’s family, and her motive remains under investigation, with sheriff’s officials declining to speculate on what drove the young woman to target the child.
The department told The Epoch Times that the family was in the front yard together when Lopez approached and attacked. Other family members were also inside the home at the time.
Lopez was taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana for a medical evaluation, a routine procedure for suspects showing signs of distress. She was then booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on one count of attempted kidnapping.
