The wife of a Minnesota lawmaker injured in a targeted shooting shared an update over the weekend.
“We are both incredibly lucky to be alive,” Yvette Hoffman, wife of state Sen. John Hoffman, told U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) in a June 15 text message that Klobuchar posted on Facebook.
A shooter went to the Hoffman home early Saturday and shot both John Hoffman and his wife in an act of targeted political violence, according to authorities. A suspect, identified as Vance Boelter, was taken into custody on Sunday.
Yvette Hoffman told Klobuchar that she was struck by eight bullets and that her husband was struck by nine.
The couple also conveyed their devastation about Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband being killed in a separate attack that officials allege was also perpetrated by Boelter.
“We have no words,” Yvette Hoffman said. “There is never a place for this kind of political hate.”
John Hoffman is a Democrat, as is the late Hortman. Boelter served on the same workforce board as Hoffman at one point and was appointed by Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat.
Alvin Winston, an FBI special agent in charge in Minneapolis, said in a statement that the shootings were a “deliberate and violent act on public servants and their families.” The bureau is calling on people to provide information that will assist agents in the investigation.
A LinkedIn profile for Boelter listed him as most recently being the CEO of the Red Lion Group hotel, which the profile said is based in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Boelter and his wife also run a security firm called Praetorian Guard Security Services, according to the company’s website. It says Boelter “has been involved with security situations in Eastern Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East, including the West Bank, Southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.”
A query sent to the company’s email was not returned.
Yvette Hoffman also told Klobuchar that the Hoffman family “is so humbled by the love and outpouring we’ve received from everyone.” Klobuchar wrote on Facebook that she “just received this encouraging update from Senator Hoffman’s wife, Yvette, on their recovery in the hospital.” The senator added, “Grateful for their progress and will continue to keep them in our prayers.”
